It turns out that Martin Mattler's Hebrew name is Michael. And Michael, I learned, actually translates from Hebrew as "Who is like El." Meaning, essentially, Who is like the Lord? This is the name of the archangel, Michael, a prince of angels and captain of the heavenly hosts. Martin's life is represented by a book... an open book. The shoot that grows from the book tells us that the book itself is a seed, of sorts. (The tree shoot is missing from this shot.)

I delivered the third casting of this piece, as shown above. Each one looks nicer than the last as I refine my technique. The hemispherical base of the most recent version features highly polished raised surfaces. The negative space was heavily abraded to enhance the contrast.
I used white wax on the figure and the raised surfaces of the hemisphere and a clear wax on the abraded surfaces.

From a marketing standpoint, having a daemon tell me "Jesus Saves" seems much more convincing than hearing it from an angel. It's like an endorsement of President Obama coming from Newt Gingrich .
